Updated: Cold Weather Shelters Open Jan. 23 and 24 Ahead of Freezing Temps

As a winter storm brings snow and ice to the Panhandle and northern part of the state, local temperatures are expected to dip into the 40s at night, with wind chill as low as 25 degrees predicted for the next few days thanks to gusty winds. To help people stay warm and safe, cold weather shelters will be open in both counties.
Sarasota County
The 100 Church, located at 14525 Tamiami Trail, North Port, will be available for cold weather sheltering beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Those attending should bring their own sleeping materials. A meal will be provided.
The Salvation Army at 1400 10th St., Sarasota, will be open for cold weather sheltering on Thursday, Jan. 23, and Friday, Jan. 24, from 5 p.m. until 6 a.m. A meal will be provided.
Manatee County
In Manatee County, government officials coordinate with The Salvation Army to open shelter space on cold nights 1204 14th St. W., Bradenton. This is in addition to the Salvation Army’s daily sheltering program, which provides shelter to 60 individuals overnight during regular and high temperatures. Cold Weather Safety Tips
Emergency management officials remind residents that pets should not be left outside during the cold weather. People who need to be outside overnight or during the early morning hours are encouraged to dress in several warm layers and limit skin exposure to the wind.
Fire department officials advise using extreme caution when heating your home, as the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increases during very cold weather due to the improper use of heating devices. More heating safety tips can be found here.
