Please go to or My for the most up-to-date list of shelters and pertinent information; both counties emphasize that public shelters should be a last option. It is always recommended to stay with family and friends, if possible, when you're told to evacuate.

If you need to evacuate your home and head to a hurricane center, bring with you disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer and one to two facial masks for everyone in your group; a flashlight (in case your center loses power); your insurance, Medicare or Medicaid cards, driver license or photo I.D.; your children’s immunization and other important health and insurance records; each family member’s medications, along with dosage information and physician’s contact information; drinking water; snacks or special foods; bedding and pillows; a book or electronic entertainment items with headphones and chargers; changes of clothing; personal hygiene items (including toilet paper); and games/comfort items for children.

When you arrive at an evacuation center, observe guidance and instructions for any potential changes in protocol dictated by federal, state or local government. Social distancing and frequent hand-washing will be important during your time there. There will be increased sanitation and cleaning.

Masks are optional. Sarasota County recommends that those who are unvaccinated or medically vulnerable wear a mask; however, masks are not required.

In Manatee County, shelter openings vary with each emergency.
