The New New Nostalgia

Early-2000s Style Is Back. Here's How to Wear It.

The ’90s were back, but now early-aughts fashion is the hot look. Here’s how to incorporate a little Y2K into your wardrobe.

Flower Power

You might have thought corsets were only seen in period films, but you would be wrong: They are an early 2000s trend now making a comeback. This corset from Anthropologie is as English farmhouse as it can get, with bright florals on a neutral white background. If that’s too dainty for you, try shades of lilac or pink. The cotton and linen material make this a good choice for hot summer days. $90, Anthropologie, The Mall at University Town Center, 140 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota, (941) 306-4513,

Going Clear

Color us obsessed. These Gianni Bini clear sculptural heel sandals would look right at home in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, which foreshadowed much early 2000s style. What we love about these slip-on heels is that they’re just kitschy enough. You’re making a statement, but you can still pair them with your favorite outfit and not feel like you’re wearing a costume. $42, Dillard’s, 200 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota, (941) 527-4878,

Get Loose

We’re bringing back low-rise pants (shudder) and playing with fits that are as baggy as can be. These pants from Sarasota boutique Lotus are a great way to ease into the trend without going full early aughts. The Nili Lotan Shon Pants sport giant pockets that would be right at home in a hardware store, yet their curved form make them more intriguing than might immediately meet the eye. $375, Lotus, 1464 Main St., Sarasota, (941) 906-7080,

The Splurge

The Calusa Periwinkle from local luxury handbag maker BSwanky is a perfect example of an early 2000s trend with a twist—the baguette bag. The exterior is made out of curly shearling and comes with a made-to-order gold statement chain. You’ll certainly feel like someone special walking around with this purse. $1,450, BSwanky, (941) 260-9884,

Blast From the Checkered Past

The classic silhouette of these slip-on Vans is recognizable across the world. This new eco version puts a modern twist on the fan favorite, with 100 percent organically grown cotton canvas uppers. The cushioned footbed means they’ll provide support whether you’re 15 or 50. $80, Journeys, The Mall at University Town Center, 140 University Town Center Drive, #188, Sarasota, (941) 702-9665,
