Sountrack the Storm

Your Hurricane Ian Playlist

You have no control over the storm, but you can control your radio!

By Isaac Eger September 27, 2022

So you’ve done all you can to prepare for Hurricane Ian. Your house is sandbagged, you’ve stocked up on canned food and bought more batteries in a couple days than you have in the past 10 years. Now what? Sit and worry? Big mistake! This isn’t the London Blitzkrieg. It’s out of your hands now. You don’t have to lie down and wait in the fetal position.

It’s Florida tradition to have yourself a little hurricane party. And what’s a party without some music?

We’ve put together the best 20 songs to soundtrack your hurricane.

Bruce Springsteen: "Dancing in the Dark"

In 2017, after Hurricane Irma, I knew people who were without power for over a month. This will be an anthem for too many.

Eurythmics: "Here Comes the Rain Again"

Garbage: "Only Happy When it Rains"

For the contrarian in you.

Missy Elliot: "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)"

Gene Kelly: "Singin’ in the Rain"

Please do not go outside and sing in the rain.

Bob Dylan: "Shelter From the Storm"

Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"

This has to be a rhetorical question, right?

Etta James: "Stormy Weather"

Hilary Duff: "Come Clean"

Ludwig Van Beethoven: "'Pastorale' Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68: IV Allegro"

This stormy symphony was used to soundtrack Disney’s Fantasia. This music is used in the scene where the Greek gods wreak blustery havoc on the poor little people down below.

Enya: "Storms in Africa"

Slayer: "Raining Blood"

Just some uplifting tunes for when the wind is really howling.

Darude: "Sandstorm"

For most of us, sand isn’t really a factor in the hurricane, but Ian promises to move tons of earth off of Lido Key. Guess we can look forward to paying for another multi-million dollar beach renourishment!

Scorpions: "Rock You Like a Hurricane"

Did you know that the band Scorpions is German? So they have no idea what they’re talking about in regards to hurricanes. Being “rocked like a hurricane” sounds bad!

Bette Midler: "Wind Beneath My Wings"

I wonder where all the birds go during a hurricane?

LEN: "Steal My Sunshine"

Did you have fun plans this week?

Garth Brooks: "The Thunder Rolls"

Blondie: "The Tide is High"

Reports warn of a 10-foot storm surge.

The Supremes: "Bad Weather"

ELO: "Mr. Blue Sky

Let's end on a hopeful note!
