Private security guards and no trespassing signs are popping up all along the shoreline in Sarasota and around the state, jeopardizing the public’s ability to stroll the beach. Some people have been arrested for walking on Sarasota beaches they’ve used for years. Why is this happening and is it legal?

Sarasota Tiger Bay is hosting an in-person event about this critical issue Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, noon to 1 p.m. at Michael’s On East. Panelists include Sarasota Magazine contributing editor Isaac Eger, whose story “Who Owns Florida’s Beaches?” has won state and national awards, and John McCarthy, local historian and vice president of the Historical Spanish Point Campus at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

Reservations are required; tickets are $30 for Tiger Bay members and $35 for non-members and include lunch. To reserve a spot, click here.
