Sarasota Memorial Health Care System recently earned a five-star rating from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for overall quality and safety. Only 2.2 percent of hospitals evaluated earned the distinction. Sarasota Memorial was one of just two hospitals in Florida and just 102 of 4,599 eligible facilities to receive the government's highest score. Most (1,770) were rated in the middle with three stars, while 133 (2.9 percent) received only one star.
