It's hot outside. Here are of our favorite ways to stay cool.

In the midst of our scorching summer, you might be looking for a few activities that offer a cool escape from the relentless heat—besides jumping in the pool or heading to the beach. Whether you have a knack for crafts, a love for literature, an interest in pottery, a passion for cooking or a desire to learn a new language, Sarasota has you covered with exciting and, most importantly, air-conditioned options.

Learn to Sew

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced fiber artist, Sarasota Sews can help you unlease your creativity through threads. For those new to sewing, private classes are available to help you learn the basics. And if you are already familiar with your sewing machine but want to dive deeper into the art of quilting, don't miss an upcoming two-day, first-time quilting class that takes place Tuesday, Aug. 8, and Wednesday, Aug. 9. You'll learn everything about the craft while creating your very own lap quilt. Make sure to bring your machines and notions, and don't forget to purchase your fabrics beforehand. The shop also offers open sewing events to get you out of the house and meet other people while working on your gorgeous crafts. Get ready to see your masterpiece come to life. F

Join a Banned Book Club

If you're a bookworm looking for community or you're out of the reading habit and need some inspiration, the banned book club at Bookstore1 Sarasota is the perfect haven. In this monthly club, dedicated to protecting important and threatened books, you’ll read timeless works—like August's pick, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which is one of the most banned and challenged books of the past decade. Joining the club costs just $11 and you'll receive a copy of the book to be picked up at Bookstore1 before the meeting.

Throw Some Pottery

For those seeking a messy, hands-on adventure, pottery classes at The Artful Giraffe might just be your answer. Reserve a session with pottery instructors and dive into the world of pottery throwing. The class starts with a 15-minute demonstration, after which you'll have 60 minutes to practice your skills. During that time, you can create up to two pieces, which will be fired in the kiln before the glazing process. Once the firing is complete, return to the studio at your convenience to glaze your piece. Be prepared to get your hands dirty. Consider bringing along the kids; classes are open to anyone age 6 and up.
