Back in 1949, a gaggle of young women ranging in age from 14 to 24 formed a group called the Sarasota Sun-Debs. Participants received basic modeling training and posed for photographs that were then distributed locally and nationally to help boost Sarasota’s reputation as a vacation destination. Photographer Joseph Janney Steinmetz captured this scene that year, which shows a ballet instructor giving the Sun-Debs a movement lesson on the sunny shores of Lido Beach. Other training topics? How to pick up objects from the ground, how to descend stairs and how to stand gracefully.
