Community Foundation Raises Nearly $9 Million in Eight Weeks for Season of Sharing, Disaster Recovery

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has so far raised nearly $9 million just eight weeks after the one-two punch of Hurricanes Helene and Milton capped off a catastrophic 2024 hurricane season. Of the current total, $4.9 million has been raised for the Season of Sharing campaign and an additional $3.8 million has been donated to the Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund for long-term recovery, which supports nonprofit organizations addressing community needs long after an initial disaster occurs. In November, more than $940,000 was awarded to 570 households through Season of Sharing, with the hurricanes being cited as the cause of need in almost 90 percent of cases. The foundation also granted $650,000 in November and December to support 21 human services organizations with emergency capital needs.
The Bishop-Parker Foundation recently awarded almost $3 million in grants during its fall 2024 grant cycle, including a $500,000 grant to ArtCenter Manatee; a $390,350 grant to Visible Men Academy; a $100,000 grant to Turning Points; and a $62,555 grant to the State College of Florida Foundation.
New College of Florida announced a $1 million gift for its future baseball field from Carlos Beruff, the founder of Medallion Home, and his wife Janelle. The field will be known as the "Beruff Family Field of Dreams."
Businessman, attorney, and philanthropist Hugh Culverhouse Jr. recently donated $250,000 to the Church of the Redeemer in downtown Sarasota. This contribution, structured as a matching challenge, aims to build up and expand every area of ministry and outreach in the parish.
All Faiths Food Bank recently received $126,000 in grants from four funders: $45,000 from Mosaic for the mobile pantry program in DeSoto County; $30,000 from the Dr. Samir M. Shafie Charitable Foundation for the veterans pantry; $25,000 from the Wolohan Family Foundation for the backpack program; $18,000 from the MMDP Foundation Fund of the Miramar Charitable Foundation for the backpack program; and $8,000 from the Cook Family Foundation for the backpack program.
Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe recently received a capital grant of $45,650 from the William G. & Marie Selby Foundation to help the organization purchase portable sound equipment to support its traveling shows.
Neal Communities announced that it has donated $25,000 to support community events and youth sports in November and December.
