Rep. Vern Buchanan has announced that eight teachers in Florida's 16th congressional district have been chosen for the annual Congressional Teacher Awards. The awards recognize local teachers for outstanding achievements on behalf of their students. In Sarasota and Manatee counties, this year's recipients are Linda Bolno, Rowlett Academy (Bradenton); Jessica Brumby, Ballard Elementary School (Bradenton); Jennifer Holt, SCF Collegiate School (Bradenton); Thomas Desmond, Braden River High School (Bradenton); Bryan Burns, Sarasota Military Academy (Sarasota); Kristen Costa, Fruitville Elementary School (Sarasota); and Robert Perkins, Sarasota High School (Sarasota).

According to a release, teachers who teach and live in Florida’s 16th district were nominated for the award by their principals. An independent panel of judges chose the winners, who were given a certificate and recognized by Rep. Buchanan in the Congressional Record for their achievements.
