Three Americans Now Have More Wealth Than Bottom Half of the Country

The three wealthiest Americans now have more wealth than 160 million Americans, or 63 million households, according to a new report on economic inequality issued by Washington, D.C.'s Institute for Policy Studies. The three wealthiest Americans identified in the report—Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett—now have more wealth than the bottom half of the American population. The institute based its findings on an analysis of the 2017 Forbes 400 list and the Federal Reserve’s 2016 Survey of Consumer Finances. According to the report, one in five U.S households, over 19 percent, have zero or negative net worth.
