The rate of new housing starts dropped by 5.5 percent between April and May and in May stood at 2.4 percent below the May 2016 rate, according to data released by the United States Census Bureau last week. The rate of new residential building permits also declined, by 4.9 percent between April and May; the permit rate was .8 percent lower in May than it was in May 2016.
