Trucks carrying sand from a mine in Immokalee arrived on Longboat Key Wednesday, the first step in a beach nourishment project that is expected to last till October. Between now and mid-May, approximately 40,000 cubic yards of Immokalee sand will be added from the Islander Club Condominium, 2295 Gulf of Mexico Drive, south to the north end of Seaplace Condominiums, 2045 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Truck deliveries are planned to continue through mid-September, and some areas will receive sand dredged from Longboat Pass and New Pass. The project is expected to enhance storm protection and recreation, while also creating more habitat for nesting sea turtles and shorebirds.
