Here are some top recommendations for a patriotic sip.
Bramble
The Bramble boasts the tartness of lemon and the sweetness of blackberry with a dark blue, Instagram-worthy hue.
3 blackberries, muddled
2 oz. gin
1 oz. fresh lemon juice
0.75 oz. simple syrup
0.5 oz. créme de mure
Muddle the blackberries in a separate bowl or glass. Add ingredients to a shaker and shake with ice. Strain ingredients into a chilled glass over crushed ice. Pour créme de mure on top. Garnish and serve.
Coquito Roberto
This Puerto Rican twist on eggnog is a rich holiday (or, let's be honest, anytime) drink made with rum, sweetened condensed milk and coconut cream. Puerto Ricans make by the gallons during the holiday season; here in Sarasota, Robert Villanueva makes his version—Coquito Roberto—using his grandmothers' recipe. It's got notes of cinnamon and nutmeg in addition its signature coconut flavor; to serve, keep cold and shake well before pouring. (Need a food pairing? Villanueva recommends fried green plantains with garlic salt.) Order a bottle here.
Old Fashioned
A classic drink with bitter citrusy and red cherry flavors, this will keep bitter feelings at bay.
2 oz. bourbon
0.25 oz. simple syrup
3 drops orange bitters
3 drops Angostura bitters
Garnish with Maraschino cherry and orange rind
Pour ingredients into a chilled glass with ice and stir gently until mixed. Garnish with cherry and orange rind and serve.
Daiquiri
If waiting for the results is making you want to jet to a private island, try sitting down with a simple daiquiri.
2 oz. rum
1 oz. simple syrup
1 oz. fresh lime juice
Pour ingredients into a chilled shaker with ice and shake. Pour drink into chilled, stemmed glass and serve.
Bushwacker
Feeling coconutty? Sarasota's award-winning Bushwacker Spirits has bottled the popular cocktail—a cross between a piña colada and a mudslide made with rum, cream, coffee, chocolate and coconut. Just pour over ice and let the tropical flavors take you someplace far away from your social scroll. Find a bottle at Total Wine, Winn-Dixie and Siesta Village Liquors, or learn more about the drink and its history here.
