In the wake of Hurricane Ian, Sarasota businesses and residents have scrambled to do what we do best: help others in need. In the tradition of giving back to surrounding communities, Michael's on East has partnered with Chef José Andrés' nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, to bring tens of thousands of nourishing meals to people impacted by the storm in Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota counties.

So far, Michael’s has sent more than 10,000 meals. The restaurant is supplying up to 5,000 meals per day during the recovery process, aimed at providing relief for Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota counties.

World Central Kitchen bills itself  as "a team of food first responders, mobilizing with the urgency of now to get meals to people who need them most." The organization partners with local food vendors when disasters strike, and after a referral to World Central Kitchen from a client, Michael's on East was there to heed the call.

"I've long admired chef José Andrés, and the work he is doing across the globe with World Central Kitchen is just exceptional," Michael's On East's Michael Klauber, co-proprietor of the restaurant with Phil Mancini, said in a press release. "It's a tremendous honor to partner with them because this kind of work comes from our hearts."

Michael's on East is preparing dishes like Italian-style meatballs with rigatoni and roasted broccoli, roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and corn, and even Cuban-style roasted pork with black beans and rice.

"We are fortunate that our kitchen is operational, even though the majority of the second story roof of our building is gone," Mancini said in a press release. "Thirty-five members of our staff showed up the first morning at 6 a.m. ready and excited to help."
