While the downtown Sarasota Farmers Market offers plenty of treats to eat while you shop, one new vendor, MawMaw's Chicken Pies, helps you bring a bite of the market home for dinner. The stand serves three different pot pies: chicken with vegetables, chicken only and a spicy option, "Kickin' Chicken."

Sharon Duley's stand at the Sarasota Farmers Market.

The pies are made by a grandmother and granddaughter duo in Kernersville, North Carolina, following a family recipe that has been passed down since 1923. The pies are frozen and shipped to Sarasota, where they are sold by Sharon Duley.

Duley first tried the pies thanks to her uncle, a realtor in The Villages, Florida, who gave them to friends and clients. Duley began giving them as gifts, too, before deciding to start selling them at the Lakewood Ranch farmers' market and now, at the Sarasota market. Each pie is 9 inches wide, and needs one hour to bake in the oven. They cost $20.

Duley describes the pies as "pure happiness that will make anyone smile."

"It's a blessing to see so many happy people that become returning customers," says Duley. "Once you try a MawMaw's Pie, you will be back for more."

The Sarasota Farmers Market is open 7 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday on Lemon Avenue and surrounding streets. For more info about MawMaw's Chicken Pies, call (941) 914-4328.
