Sarasota Native Lois Duncan Wrote 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'
Fans of scary movies are likely familiar with I Know What You Did Last Summer, the popular slasher film from 1997. But you may not know that the movie was based on a novel written by someone with deep Sarasota ties. Lois Duncan—pictured here in an image shot by her father, legendary photographer Joseph Janney Steinmetz—was born in 1934 and moved to Sarasota with her family as a child. Her first novel was published in 1958 and was followed by several more, including I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1973. When the film version was released 24 years later, the publisher reissued the book. It went on to sell more than 500,000 copies.
