The National Weather Service Has Issued a Flood Warning for Areas Near the Myakka River

Following on the heels of the damage wrought by Hurricane Debby, parts of the Myakka River are expected to see elevated flood levels between Thursday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 10. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a flood warning area for nearby areas and is encouraging people to take precautions now to protect their families and property.
The flooding is expected to happen along the Myakka River in the following areas:
- North of Clark Road on Thursday, Aug. 8
- Near I-75 during the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 9
- Along U.S. 41 during the early morning of Saturday, Aug. 10
Areas immediately surrounding the river, especially low-lying areas, may experience up to 2 feet of flooding.

A temporary evacuation center is available to any citizen who is relocating from at-risk areas along the Myakka River at Woodmere Park, 3951 Woodmere Park Blvd., Venice. Those coming to the evacuation center are being asked to come with what they need. Sarasota County has created a disaster supply checklist and emergency preparedness guide at scgov.net/beprepared.
Self-service sandbags distribution points will also be available. Individuals are asked to bring their own shovels. The distribution points are located at:
- George Mullen Activity Center, 1602 Kramer Way, North Port (until supplies last)
- Sarasota County Fleet-South, 4531 Annex Road, Venice (from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8)
