Cat Depot recently received a grant for $5,000 from the Petco Foundation. Grant funds will provide necessary medical care and assist with costs of sheltering 34 kittens. In 2016, Cat Depot took in 1,532 felines, of which 1,107 were kittens.

The Harvey Milk Festival recently announced a series of 2017 Youth Outreach Scholarship Opportunities. The opportunities include one $1,000 scholarship and two $1,000 internships for local youth ages 13-25 who identify as LGBTQIA. The Bradenton Kiwanis Foundation and Club contributed $15,000 to Take Stock in Children at the Leadership Prayer Breakfast held Jan. 26. Take Stock in Children is a nonprofit program that helps children from low-income families achieve academic and personal success through a postsecondary college scholarship and mentorship program led by a local partnership of schools, businesses, agencies and individuals.

The Florida Solar Energy Industries Association is hosting the Run for the Sun 5K Saturday, Feb. 4, at Nathan Benderson Park, 5851 Nathan Benderson Circle, Sarasota. Race-day registration starts at 6 a.m., with the 5K beginning at 7:15. Competitors will receive a custom-designed T-shirt and chip timing. The first 300 finishers will receive a finisher’s medal and there will be other awards for top finishers. Potential participants can register here and receive $5 off the entry fee of $30 with the online code "Media." Parking for the event is free for all participants.
