American consumers plan to spend an average of $967 during the holiday shopping season, according to survey results published by the National Retail Federation. That number represents a 3.4 percent increase over last year's survey number. Fifty-nine percent of survey respondents said they would do their holiday shopping online, the most popular option. Department stores ranked second, with 57 percent of respondents saying they would visit them.
