The Icon of Ear Surgery and Research - Herbert Silverstein

In 1973, at the age of thirty-eight, Dr. Silverstein retired from academic medicine and began an ENT practice in Sarasota. At the time, it was a sleepy retirement town. Throughout his career, his focus remained on research and development.

In 1979, Dr. Silverstein founded the Ear Research Foundation with the aim of researching improved ways to assist patients dealing with vertigo and hearing loss. The goal was to pioneer new procedures that were not only more straightforward but also yielded better results. The Foundation achieved numerous successful research projects, emphasizing its commitment to advancing medical knowledge.

His mission extended beyond research to education and community service. Physician education began in 1983, marked by the establishment of the third clinical fellowship in the country. This fellowship remains the oldest training program in the USA after 41 years. Teaching ENT fellows has been a highlight of his career.

This year, the Foundation commemorates a significant milestone—50 years of practice in Sarasota and the training of 50 fellows. He feels lucky to have three accomplished fellows join the practice. Dr. Jack Wazen, the first fellow, has gained international recognition as a top otologist/neurotologist. Seth Rosenberg, with 32 years of partnership, stands out as one of the nation’s premier sinus and ear surgeons. Neil Nayak, the latest addition, specializes in hyperacusis surgery, showcasing the continuous growth and expertise of the practice.

It has been an honor for him to make contributions to the specialty of otology/neurotology. His legacy includes not only advancements in medical procedures but also the impact on physicians nationwide through the training of dedicated fellows.
