Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, a day to remember U.S. military personnel who lost their lives fighting for our country. This photo, from Memorial Day 1941, shows a dedication ceremony at the American Legion War Memorial at the center of Five Points Plaza in downtown Sarasota, which was erected in 1917 to honor Sarasota servicemen fighting in World War I. At its dedication, two local sailors who were home on leave hoisted a flag dedicated by Bertha Palmer, and Sarasota’s town band played “The Star Spangled Banner” while the crowd sang along. These ceremonies took place almost daily from 1917 to 1925, and then continued sporadically until the 1950s, when the monument was declared a traffic hazard and moved to Bayfront Park.
