Forget other states' "I Voted" stickers, with their demure fonts and stoic American flags. Sarasota and Manatee counties' "I Voted" stickers have major swag.

In Sarasota County, Pine View School freshman Carys Smith submitted the winning design in the Sarasota Supervisor of Elections' "I Voted" sticker design competition. Smith's entry was one of more than 350 submissions received from 14 schools around the county. It depicts an alligator floating in an American flag-themed inner tube, holding a tropical drink while smiling and wearing sunglasses and a Panama hat as the sun shines down.

Smith's sticker is being used exclusively in Sarasota County for the general election. That means that if you hit the polls today, you'll be offered a sticker with her design on it.

“I am thrilled at the response we received for our sticker design competition,” Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner said when he announced Smith as the winner. “We have so many talented students in our community, so it was difficult to pick a winner from all the submissions. I can’t wait to see voters proudly wearing the new sticker design after they cast their vote.”

In Manatee County, meanwhile, this year's "I Voted" sticker features Manatee High School student Lauren Holbrook's drawing of a manatee waving an American flag. There's a heart on its chest, and it's positioned against a blue and red background dotted with yellow stars.

During non-election years, the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections office works with Manatee County schools to design the stickers. In 2023, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County also participated in the campaign, which is how Holbrook found out about it.

"I took the time to incorporate all the key elements," Holbrook said at a school board meeting during which she was recognized for the design. "Since this is Manatee County, I had to include a drawing of one of our adorable manatees. In addition, it was important to include both red and blue to represent our major political parties. The stars were my own little touch. They're my favorite shape."

Polls are open until 7 p.m. today in both counties. To find your polling place, visit sarasotavotes.gov or votemanatee.gov.
