Sarasota Police Chief James Rieser Announces Retirement
Sarasota Police Chief James Rieser has announced his retirement from the City of Sarasota effective today, Aug. 25, 2021, at 5 p.m., citing recent health issues.
“Because of recent unexpected health issues and after much consideration and reflection, I have submitted my retirement. I have been honored and humbled to serve as the Chief of Police for the past seven months,” Rieser said in a statement.
Rieser joined the Sarasota Police Department in April 1992. He was appointed police chief in January 2021 after former chief Bernadette DiPino stepped down.
Update, 12:35 p.m.: City of Sarasota manager Marlon Brown has announced that Deputy Chief Rex Troche will take over as interim chief of police.
