Effective immediately, Florida is shutting down bars due to COVID-19.

Florida bars must cease serving alcohol immediately, according to the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation. The state agency issued the order the same day it was reported that Florida had 8,942 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, a new record for the number of new cases reported in one day.

Bars were allowed to reopen earlier this month as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis' Phase 2 reopening plan. They were previously allowed to serve customers seated inside up to 50 percent of the bar's capacity, as well as customers at outside tables as long as social distancing rules were followed.

Under the new rules, bars may still sell alcohol "in sealed containers for consumption off the premises," and restaurants with bars may continue to serve alcohol.
