The next Sarasota Tiger Bay Club luncheon will feature a panel discussion on the proposal to create "single member districts" for the Sarasota County Commission. Currently, the commission is made up of five commissioners who are required to live in five different districts, but all voters in the county are able to vote in all five commission elections. The "single member" proposal would allow voters to only vote in the County Commission election in their district. Proponents of the proposal, which will be on the November ballot, say the move would reduce the power of money in local politics by allowing candidates to campaign only in their districts rather than across the entire county. The Tiger Bay event will include former County Commissioners John Wesley White and Nora Patterson and Hugh Culverhouse and Dan Lobeck of the Sarasota Alliance for Fair Elections, which supports the measure. The event runs 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Michael's on East, 1212 S. East Ave., Sarasota. Tickets are $27-$32.
