Sears Holdings is closing 20 stores nationwide this September, including its only Sarasota Sears store, located inside the Westfield Sarasota Square mall. According to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the 20 stores being closed are unprofitable. They take up 3.8 million square feet of leasable space and the base rent for the stores costs the company $11.2 million each year. In addition to Sears stores, Sears Holdings owns Kmart and brands like Kenmore and DieHard.
