Suncoast Charities for Children announced Tuesday that it is moving the 2017 Thunder By the Bay festival out of downtown. According to a press releases, the decision "was prompted by the [City of Sarasota’s] position to substantially increase fees and charges that sponsoring organizations must pay and a potential revision to the City’s existing outdoor special events policy." Next year's festival, scheduled to take place Jan. 5-8, will instead take place at the Ancient Oak Gun Club, Gulf Gate Village and the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch. Last year’s festival generated an economic impact of $8.8 million, with 93 percent of attendees surveyed indicating that they would return for the 2017 festival.
