Pilates Power

How did you get started?

I was a runner, but my knees started to tell me it was time to find something else. I’d heard about Pilates, and I was lucky enough to find Dynamic Fitness. I started doing private lessons two-and-a-half years ago with [Dynamic Fitness owners] Kathy Dandois-Boivin and Sherry Lyons-Resh, as well as another instructor, Michelle Sibilia.

Routine? I go three days a week: I have a mat class on Tuesday night, and I do reformer [a Pilates resistance machine] Thursday night and Saturday morning.

Motivation? There are times when I’m busy and think, “I can’t do it tonight.” But then I say, “No, it’s easy to get in the habit of not doing something.” I just go and the work gets done. It creates a good balance. It helps that I have friends doing the same classes.

Benefits? I feel healthier. I feel more energized. I’m more productive at work. It really keeps me loose and limber and toned. People look at me and say, “Oh, my gosh, you lost so much weight.” But I really didn’t. I just reformed. Plus I like to go skiing over the winter, so about six weeks before I go, I work with Sherry on balance and control.

Tips? Make sure that the instructors you’re going to are properly trained. The instructors have to be aware, or you can hurt yourself.
