When architect Jonathan Winer bought a 1950s ranch near Southside Village as an investment rental property, he had no idea it would one day become his home. “I relocated to a condo in Sarasota because I had lived in apartments in New York and California all my life,” Winer explains. “I hadn’t even considered a house as an option.”

But here, the lure of a single-family dwelling was appealing. Winer became a broker with Michael Saunders & Company, added a Florida architectural license to his resume, joined the Sarasota Architectural Foundation and focused on preserving the city’s modern design heritage.

“After months of house shopping, I realized this ranch had great potential,” he says. “It offered the spirit of mid-century modern architecture, needed no structural work, and the volume of the ceilings tipped the scales in its favor.” Relying on Florida colors and glass surfaces to refract sunlight, Winer converted the once dark home into a sunshine-filled haven. “I’ve always done neutral walls and colorful furniture,” he says. “This is the reverse: The furniture is white and the color is on the walls.”

Porcelain tiles from Fisher Tile replace the home’s interior terrazzo floors, although original outside entry and patio slabs, plus a 1950s terrazzo fireplace, were painstakingly restored.

Shattered glass end tables and a pivoting coffee table, all from Home Resource, were chosen for practicality and design interest. On the coffee table, a section on casters rotates 360 degrees.

Purchased at dkVogue, the three-legged shell chair designed by Hans Wegner in 1963 is made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son, a perfect fit for the home’s mid-century modern aesthetic.

Dramatic scroll back chairs caught Winer’s eye at the Woman’s Exchange: “With their 1960s design and funky retro black and white animal print fabric, I absolutely had to have them,” he says.

Walls are painted ice blue and chartreuse yellow to evoke the charm of ‘50s Florida and provide a foil for white dining chairs and white and chrome bar stools from Sarasota Collection.
