Another 833,000 people filed for unemployment last week, according to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Labor, and 759,000 freelancers, independent contractors, part-time workers and others filed for the government's Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Plan. By comparison, weekly claims topped out at 665,000 in March 2009 during the Great Recession, the country’s last economic downturn.

According to The New York Times, 9 million of the 22 million jobs lost in March and April have been regained, and analysts expect that the August jobs report will show a decrease from July's double-digit unemployment rates. Still, according to the Times, more than 29 million Americans were receiving some sort of unemployment insurance as of mid-August.

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 22 were in California (6,562), Illinois (3,856), Pennsylvania (1,926), Kansas (1,061) and Rhode Island (503), while the largest decreases were in Florida (21,127), Texas (9,248), New Jersey (5,235), Virginia (3,715) and North Carolina (3,708).
