Last Saturday, May 10, starting at 7 a.m. and lasting until 1 p.m., a line wrapped around the north end of The Landings shopping plaza, extending all the way to the Publix entrance around the corner. Grocery shoppers gawked at the bystanders. What was it all for?
Peachey’s Baking Co. was celebrating the grand opening of its brick-and-mortar storefront and handing out free doughnuts to its customers.
Prior to opening the shop, Peachey’s popular doughnuts were only sold from a light blue food truck that set up at a rotating list of Sarasota businesses and markets, typically from November through April. Then the truck would hit the road for the summer, setting up at national festivals and fairs. While the truck will still be operational, local Peachey’s devotees—of whom there are many—can now sink their teeth into a warm, yeasted doughnut that's dripping with vanilla glaze ($5 each) or a salt-dusted pretzel ($8 each) all year long, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Drip coffee is also available for $3.
The enormous, pillowy doughnuts are made from a recipe that incorporates sourdough starter and is based on founder Nate Peachey's Amish upbringing. At last weekend's opening, friends, family and fans spilled out into the parking lot, joyful about getting their sweet breakfast fix again.
“Are they really that good?” one Publix shopper asked as I walked by, holding my warm doughnut like a prize.
“It’s the best doughnut you’ll ever have in your life,” I replied. I mean it. This doughnut is so good, it may spoil all others for you.
Peachey’s Baking Co. is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 7 a.m.-1 p.m., at 4800 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information, click here.
