Beat the Heat With These Sweet, Cold Treats

Strawberry Gelato
A line stretches out the door of downtown Sarasota’s Gelato-Go pretty much every evening, thanks to the shop’s ultra-creamy gelato. We’ve tried the Stracciatella (similar to cookies and cream), the Bacio (chocolate and hazelnut) and pretty much every other type, but our favorite might be the strawberry, which delivers a dose of pure summertime berry bliss. 14 S. Orange Ave., Sarasota, (941) 444-7051. The shop has two other area locations as well: The Mall at University Town Center, 140 University Town Center Drive, Unit 102, Sarasota, (941) 263-4885; 119 Bridge St., Bradenton Beach, (941) 782-8414; gelatogo.net
Churro Ice Cream Sandwich
At The Fat Donkey, you can customize your ice cream exactly how you like, by adding toppings or specialty cones, but the best way to upgrade your frozen treat is by putting it between two churro “cookies” to make an indulgent ice cream sandwich. You can pick a classic ice cream flavor, but we’d highly recommend the shop’s cookie dough flavor or one of its rotating specials, like praline ice cream. 1461 Main St., Sarasota, (941) 260-9531, thefatdonkey.com
Piña Colada Smoothie
CROP Juice has made a name for itself thanks to its organic, cold-pressed juices, but the shop’s selections are not limited to juice. You’ll find smoothies and other blended drinks, as well as vegan doughnuts and other kinds of snacks and takeaways. For a tropical experience, check out the piña colada-like Kokolada smoothie, made with coconut water and meat and flavored with pineapple, dates, vanilla and more. 2480 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota, (941) 923-8640; 8211 Tourist Center Drive, Bradenton, (941) 358-8182; cropjuice.com
Blueberry Lemon Basil Popsicle
Sarasota’s Pop Craft has elevated the humble popsicle into a gourmet treat, with flavors that range from light and fruity to rich and creamy. We love them all, but recently we’ve been enjoying the company’s sweet and herbal blueberry lemon basil creation. You can find it, and other Pop Craft flavors, at a number of local shops. Visit the company’s website for a full list. popcraftpops.com
