Starbucks announced Monday that it will cease using plastic straws at all of its 28,000 global stores by 2020. The move will eliminate the use of 1 billion plastic straws each year. Environmental activists had pressured the company to make the move. More than 500 million plastic straws are used in the U.S. every day, and consistently rank as one of the top trash items found on beaches. In part because of straw waste, more than 700 species of marine wildlife ingest plastic litter.
