From 8 to 9 a.m. this Friday, March 10, Sarasota Magazine managing editor Bethany Ritz will join Izzy Sanábria on WSLR's Latin Explosion, a show hosted by Juan Montenegro that covers 20th-century salsa, Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban music. The three will discuss Sarasota's salsa scene, Sanábria's influence on the genre and a recent Sarasota Magazine story on the topic by Andrea González.

Known as the Salsa King, Sanábria had a major influence on the genre. He was the editor of Latin N.Y. magazine from 1973 to 1985 after having designed numerous record covers for the famed label Fania. He also traveled with the Fania "All-Stars" (the label's top musicians at the time), hosted the Latin N.Y. Music Awards and a television show called Salsa (a Latin version of Soul Train) and more.

Montenegro was a younger contemporary of Sanábria's living in Chicago in the '70s and '80s, when he hosted the original Latin Explosion radio show and visited New York often, enjoying the Big Apple's burgeoning salsa scene and admiring Sanábria and his work. Today, Montenegro is a Sarasotan keeping the genre alive locally through WSLR and throughout North America and Europe via the Pacifica Broadcast Network. Harvey Averne consults on the show, which is produced by Claire Montenegro.

Listen to the full show from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday, March 10, on your radio at 96.5 FM or online at wslr.org
