Sarasota Memorial Hospital was recently recognized as one of the nation's top 100 hospitals by Fortune/Merative, formerly Watson Health. Each year, the organization gives out distinctions for the best hospitals in the country. This is the sixth time Sarasota Memorial has made the list.

The hospital also made a list of the top 40 teaching hospitals—ranking among the top three in Florida—and a list of the top 50 cardiovascular hospitals.

According to the report, patients treated at top 100 hospitals are 25 percent less likely to die in the hospital, 30 percent less likely to experience complications and 50 percent less likely to get a hospital-acquired infection, compared to non-ranked hospitals.

If all hospitals performed at Sarasota's benchmark rates, an additional 104,000 patients would be saved in hospitals nationwide, 55,000 more patients would leave the hospital complication-free and 18,600 fewer patients would need to be readmitted within 30 days of their stay.
