The American economy added 156,000 new jobs in August, while the unemployment rate ticked up from 4.3 percent to 4.4 percent, according to figures released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job gains occurred in manufacturing, construction, professional and technical services, health care and mining.
