The Place

The Coffee Loft, 5025 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, (941) 706-4047, coffeeloft41.com. This somewhat unusual North Trail space, which has been updated with a clean, modern look and a cozy, dark-wood palette, doubles as a nonprofit for arts and other community causes: All profits go to humanitarian and international projects. In addition to the counter and pastry case on the ground floor, a spiral staircase leads to a spacious upstairs “loft” with more tables, comfy seating spaces and a small stage for intimate performances and open-mic nights.

The People

College students hanging out; young professionals sipping coffee and working on their laptops.

Time Factor

Technically, you probably could get in and out in a matter of minutes, but it’s not really an environment that encourages rushing.

The Food

Centered on a selection of fair-trade coffees, the Loft also offers a chalkboard menu of daily panini, quiche and soup selections. Plus, there’s a pastry case displaying scones, bagels, cookies and more. For a quiet study spot or a soothing, homey break in the middle of the work day, you can’t go wrong with a cup of dark roast and a grilled cheese on crusty bread, along with broccoli and cheddar soup and a fresh-baked cookie.
