Brohard Beach

Ongoing

If your pooch is feeling as stir crazy as you are, pack him or her in the car and pay a visit to this Venice beach, Sarasota County’s only dog-friendly beach setting, complete with Paw Park. There’s a fenced dog play yard for exercise, and picnic tables and plenty of sand to relax after all that running around. Hours are 7 a.m. to dusk; 1600 Harbor Drive.

Selby Gardens’ 40th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition

Aug. 27-Sept. 20

This annual show centered on images shot in the gardens (or at its sister campus, Historic Spanish Point) goes virtual this year, but it’s still a chance to see some outstanding photos of nature and the gardens’ beauty. There are cash prizes for the winners in categories including birds, bugs and critters and favorite scenes; check it out at selby.org.

Pirate Flag at Cool Today Park

Aug. 29

Remember live concerts? Ah, the nostalgia. The Atlanta Braves’ North Port spring training facility, CoolToday Park, offers a return to the stage, albeit in an outdoor, socially distanced way, when it presents Pirate Flag, a tribute act performing the music of country star Kenny Chesney. On the plaza in front of the stadium; lawn chairs and blankets encouraged, but no umbrellas, coolers, etc. Call (941) 413-5000 or check out tickets here.

Snook Haven

Ongoing

Craving fried gator bites, fried green tomatoes, or a pulled pork sandwich? This outpost on the Myakka River in Venice is open for business, and it also offers canoe and kayak rentals so you can head out on the water under the shade of live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Wednesdays-Sundays only; go to snookhaven.com or call (941) 485-7221.
