Intercoastal Medical Group was recently named as a participating clinical site for a trial to test chelation therapy. The test will examine the use of intravenous chelation treatments in combination with oral vitamins in diabetic patients who have had heart attacks to determine if the treatments reduce recurrent heart episodes, such as heart attacks, stroke and death, by removing toxins from the blood. Funding for the $37 million trial was announced in 2016 by The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health at the National Institutes of Health. The trial is also co-funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Chelation is a process by which a medication can “grab” and remove toxic metal pollutants, such as lead or cadmium, that are present in most individuals.
