Photographer Damon Powers captured this late-summer sunset over the Blackburn Point Bridge this week—a one-lane, steel truss swing bridge connecting Casey Key to the Osprey mainland. In operation since 1926, the bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the only swing bridge left in Sarasota County and is one of just a few left in Florida.

It uses a "swing" mechanism to allow boats to pass through, although it frequently requires repairs and, as recently as spring of this year, Sarasota County has discussed the idea of replacing it with a new bridge that would add an extra lane for automobiles and a sidewalk for pedestrians. But locals who use it to get to and from the mainland are attached to the more-than-century-old landmark.

"[The bridge] is a treasured historical landmark that warrants preservation," Powers says. "Some of Old Florida's unique charm should be retained."
