Back in the early 1970s, Sarasota Jungle Gardens, a popular local attraction since it opened in 1936, created the Exotic Bird Show, where parrots and macaws rode bikes, roller-skated and showed off their counting skills. But Alberta, a scarlet macaw, is not a performer. A rescue and resident of Jungle Gardens for 10 years, Alberta, 13, is known for her sweet temperament, beautiful tail feathers, and a love of wooden toys, neck rubs and making a mess. “It’s like having a five-year-old around you for the rest of your life,” says Rachel Kimball, head of Jungle Gardens' animal department.
