James Murley, the chief resilience officer for Miami-Dade County, will speak on “Enhancing Local Sustainability Through Resilience Planning” at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at New College of Florida’s Sainer Pavilion, 5313 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota. Climate change is a topic in courses taught in several New College programs, including environmental studies, anthropology and political science. “Since south Florida is sometimes referred to as ‘Ground Zero’ for climate change in the United States, we are very interested in the work he is doing in Miami,” said Anthony Andrews, professor of anthropology at New College, according to a press release. “We thought it would be relevant to Sarasota, which may be affected by rising sea levels, in a way similar to the situation in Miami.” The event is free.
