Unity can sound like a lofty idea, something invoked in speeches or printed on banners. In real life, it tends to be quiet, unglamorous work that demands patience and commitment. It’s a school built for children learning English, a choir that brings music into overlooked spaces, a conversation that crosses political lines and a safe landing place for young people aging out of foster care. This year’s Unity Award honorees reflect that kind of work. They serve Sarasota and Manatee in different ways, but they share a belief that community is something we build deliberately and includes everyone. Their impact can be seen in dollars raised, students reached, land protected, barriers lowered and trust painstakingly restored.
