Nathan Benderson Park Receives $10 Million State Appropriation for New Multi-Sport Complex and Boathouse

Plus, new grants for UnidosNow, All Faiths Food Bank, Laurel Civic Association and more.

A $75,000 grant to UnidosNow from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County will expand UnidosNow's 2Gen Empowered Parents program.

Nathan Benderson Park (NBP) recently received a $10 million state appropriation in Florida's 2026-2027 budget. The funding will allow NBP to move forward with its planned multi-sport complex and boathouse, which will include roughly 100,000 square feet of hardwood flooring for volleyball, gymnastics, cheerleading, basketball, and/or pickleball courts; a boathouse for rowing and paddling programs; flexible community gathering space; and a resilient indoor venue designed to support post-storm readiness and regional recovery efforts. 

The Patterson Foundation has contributed $250,000 to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s (CDP) Global Recovery Fund to strengthen medium- and long-term recovery efforts following the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June. 

Through its ACE grants program, United Way Suncoast has awarded $450,000 in funding to 26 nonprofits across Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. 

UnidosNow has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County's Two-Generation Approach Fund, Allen Wirtz Nobbe and Jo Bowen Nobbe Fund and Edward K. Roberts Fund. The funding will expand UnidosNow's 2Gen Empowered Parents program, which equips Hispanic/Latino parents and grandparents with the skills, leadership opportunities, and community connections they need to navigate the U.S. education system and support their children's success. 

All Faiths Food Bank recently received $75,000 from eight funders: Bank of America Charitable Foundation, $15,000 (Mobile Pantry program); Masala Giving Circle, $10,000 (Margie’s Market by All Faiths Food Bank); Isermann Family Foundation, $20,000 (BackPack program); First Horizon Foundation, $10,000 (BackPack program); The Lake Club Women’s Giving Circle, $5,000 (BackPack program), Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch, $5,000 (BackPack program), Suncoast Credit Union, $5,000 (BackPack program) and Venice Golf and Country Club, $5,000 (BackPack program).

The Women's Resource Center has awarded 106 women a share of $132,500 in scholarships, the largest scholarship class in the program's history.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe recently received a grant of $40,000 from The Shubert Foundation, designated for the theater troupe's 2026-2027 season.

The Laurel Civic Association received a $24,424 grant from Gulf Coast Community Foundation's Evelyn F. Tobian Legacy Fund to support the civic association's youth empowerment initiatives, including its Center for Academic Success after school academic program andits  Summer Teen Empowerment Program (STEP). 

Innovation Academy SRQ (IASRQ) recently announced a gift of $10,200 to begin the planning and construction of its Legacy Field on the school grounds. The donations were a result of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s 2026 Giving Challenge.
