Photo: Venice Drive-In Church, 1955
Architect Victor Lundy, who died last year at age 101, designed some of Sarasota’s most significant buildings, including multiple places of worship, like this drive-in Presbyterian church in Venice. Constructed in 1955, it was featured in a photo spread published by Life magazine in April of that year, which is where this image comes from. The 1950s’ drive-in church trend came about after religious leaders began looking for convenient places for worshippers to gather and turned to drive-in movie theaters that were vacant during daylight hours. Later on, churches began building standalone drive-in churches to host services. The Venice church was demolished in 1965.
