SRQ Airport Reports Slight Dip in Flights, Passenger Numbers in June

Airport CEO Rick Piccolo attributes it to flight reductions due higher fuel prices, airline staffing shortages and fears of a recession.

In June, 288,420 passengers traveled through Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, according to new data released by the airport this week. That's a 7.8 percent decrease in passengers compared to June 2021, which airport CEO Rick Piccolo attributes to higher passenger loads and flight reductions due higher fuel prices, airline staffing shortages and fears of a recession.

Still, the airport says it expects to end its fiscal year on Sept. 30 with a record 3.5 million passengers, and it expects to continue its growth into the next fiscal year, with the return of Air Canada flights to Toronto and Allegiant service to Minneapolis. The airport has also embarked on a number of projects, including breaking ground on a new ground transportation facility; improved and expanded concessions; and a new ground-level terminal that will provide at least five additional gates for aircraft arrivals and departures.

SRQ experienced its busiest year in history in 2021; so far in 2022, passengers traveling through the airport total 2,093,305 compared to 1,459,691 year-to-date for 2021, an increase of 43 percent.
