Remember the 120 peacocks that used to stop traffic as they sauntered across Longbeach roads, pecked at their reflections on shiny black cars and let out blood-curdling screams during mating season?

Well, two years ago, the Township of Longboat Key rounded most of them up and sent them to (hopefully) good homes in farms out east. Only 10 to 12 males remain, says Longbeach resident Michael Drake. He’s a little sad about it.

“They were here before most of us,” he says, “but I’m sure there will be one crazy who brings in a female again.”
