Nearly half of the 43,000 students enrolled in Sarasota County schools participate in free and reduced meal programs during the school year. But when school ends, hunger begins. To try and fill the “hunger gap” for children who lose access to meals and food pantries at school, All Faiths Food Bank is launching its eighth annual Campaign Against Summer Hunger. This annual effort involves behind-the-scenes fundraising to compile a six-figure match, followed by a community campaign that lasts from April 1 through May 15. This year, the match totals $800,000; the goal is to raise $1.6 million and reach 35,000 children in Sarasota and DeSoto counties. Keith Monda and Veronica Brady will spearhead this year's effort as co-chairs.
