The Sarasota-Manatee region's combined unemployment rate rose to 9.4 percent in July, according to new data released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state unemployment rate also ticked up to 11.3 percent, a percentage point above June's rate. During the month of July, 497,000 non-agricultural jobs were lost in Florida, with the leisure and hospitality reporting the biggest decrease in jobs, at 254,400.

Likewise, in Sarasota-Manatee, the biggest job losses were reported in leisure and hospitality; education and health services; trade, transportation and utilities; manufacturing; other services; mining, logging and construction; financial activities; and information.
